June, 2013 - jumbled up

31/07/13

A quiet month other than catching upwith friends. The only other things were .....

Thursday 25th: pub quiz

When I first became friends with Francine and her family (back in 1998) we used to go to a pub quiz - usually Francine, borther Liam, sisters Bryanna and Dominique and friend Anthony. Others would join us on occasions, such as a work mate of mine called Phil. We started at a pub called The Cherry Tree and then The College Green and then Father Flanagan's Irish Pub.

We always had a good laugh and would be competitive in a freindly way with other regulars. Sometimes we won, sometimes second, occasionally further back - but we always laughed a lot. It is just a fun thing to do.

Anyway, on this day, I went along to a pub quiz with friends from work and it was also a fun night. There were enough of us for two teams. Admittedly, I knew bugger all and was barely a contributor, but we had a rivalry with the other work team and that adds some spice to the occasion. Well, a team won and our two teams came joint second by one point and we had a tie-breaker that we lost.

But on these occasions, it is the company that counts and this was a good night.

Saturday 27th: In Bob We Trust

Carolyn had told me that there was an event on but wouldn't tell me what it was - that's fine by me. So we headed into the cinema and then it started. It was a documentary about Father Bob - a crew had been following and filming him for the last 3 or 4 years and this told the story of him over that time and his fight to keep his parish whilst the arch bishop worked to remove him.

I have always enjoyed Father Bob and Carolyn has never understood it, but having seen the doco she has completely turned around on that and he realised that the reason that she had decided that she didn't like him was because she had mistaken him for somebody else. Fair enough.

The doco was actually very interesting and Bob's outlook on things are always entertaining and also well thought out. There was lots to take in and I may have to see it again. So a nice treat from Carolyn and also nice that she now appreciates the man.

Sunday 28th: Jake Bugg

When I assessed music from 2012, the international CD of the year for me was Jake Bugg's first and only CD. He has plenty of time for lots more as he is only 19.

I don't know why I like his stuff so much - I suppose that you can hear his influences in his music and he does them proud. There is all sorts in there and his collation of those influences creates something special. It is simple music - no big productions - just the performing of the songs. The melodies are great and he is a good story teller.

Getting to see him live was great - he did all the songs I knew and through in some new stuff. His versions of the songs is true to how they are on record - which is again helped by keeping the songs simple. He played for just over an hour and it was fine - it was all I wanted and I left contented.
